Do you know what a wobbling cushion is? What about a balance disc, stability cushion, or wiggle seat?
They may seem really bizarre, but surprisingly, if your kid struggles to sit still, has poor balance, or has insufficient core strength, they may be very effective. We pediatric occupational therapists use them often, but since they’re so cheap and straightforward, parents and teachers may also use them with ease.
I want to thank Fun and Function for sponsoring this article and providing us a sample wobbling seat before we get started. A fantastic online retailer for all kinds of pediatric therapy equipment is Fun and Function. I really like this business since they comprehend children and any particular requirements they can have.
What is a Wiggle Seat or Wobble Cushion?
The same object is known by the names wobble cushions, wiggle chairs, fidget seats, and balancing discs. Whatever name you give it, it always refers to an inflated cushion, often in the form of a disk and frequently with a rough surface. You may sit on this disc to:
- Help with attention deficits
- bolster your core stability and posture
- extend the amount of time you can spend seated
- Improve your feeling of balance.
That’s rather cool, don’t you think? All of the aforementioned are supported by a wobbling cushion.
Who Should Use a Wiggle Seat or Wobble Cushion?
Wiggle chairs have been around for a while and are often used with children who have sensory problems or challenges, such as those who have autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorder. All of those categories may struggle with balance issues, concentration issues, difficulties sitting still, and poor core strength.
However, these issues affect a lot of children, not only those who have diagnoses. The wobbling cushion is also extremely compact, low profile, and, at the end of the day, entertaining!
Really, any youngster attempting to address any of the issues we’ve just discussed might gain benefit from using a wiggle seat.
How Wobble Cushions Benefit Children
What is so unique about wiggle seats? Although they aren’t as sturdy as a regular chair, they aren’t so unstable that a youngster may fall off or get unbalanced, as some kids would if they sat on an exercise ball, for example.
Some children find that moving around helps them concentrate, and using wobble cushions keeps youngsters moving while being significantly less distracting to others around them. The wobbling cushion’s movement provides proprioceptive and vestibular input.
Both of which may be quite relaxing and satisfy the demands of sensory seekers.
The textured wiggle chairs also provide tactile feedback, much as ours do. Some young children with tactile sensitivity may prefer to sit on a smooth wobbling cushion.
The continual wiggling that the wobble cushion requires stimulates the back and stomach muscles almost constantly, making it an excellent core stability exercise.
Similar to adults, children with poor balance may actually become more aware of it with practice. They may find it difficult to walk over a balancing beam, but by routinely sitting on a wiggle seat, they can improve their balance in smaller, more effective increments.
Utilizing a Wiggle Seat
A wiggle seat is easy to use. Simply place it below your kid, on the floor or in their chair. (Some people like placing them on their desk chair for a little exercise at the workplace!)
You should never push a youngster to sit on it, so keep that in mind. There are several reasons a youngster may not want to, including as the fact that it bothers them or makes them feel wobbly (perhaps due to weak core strength and/or balance). Despite the fact that most children favor and enjoy them.
Additionally, kids often react better when they sit on it at 20–40 minute intervals; the change of pace may be energizing. Some youngsters, however, like it so much that they want to sit on it again throughout the day.
In addition to being a terrific sensory activity, many wobble chairs are sturdy enough to stand on, which makes for a more difficult balance and core strength workout.
How to Use a Wiggle Seat Most Effectively
A wobble cushion may essentially be used whenever your kid is sitting, however there are certain periods of the day when it could be especially useful:
- while sitting at the table and eating meals
- at their school desk or table.
- If your kid often gets up and leaves the room before they have read the fourth page of the book, story hour at the library is a great option.
- finishing homework
- working on creative projects
- in a vehicle
- gaming on a board
- assembling puzzles
- Anytime, only to stimulate their senses, or as a part of their sensory diet (keep in mind that in this situation, they may use it to stand on for balance exercises!)
*Also, never put the wobbling cushion inside a high chair or a car seat. It will make the youngster dangerous and out of line with the product’s requirements.

The majority of wobble cushions and wiggle chairs have the same disc shape filled with air or, in some instances, gel to allow the body to move while sitting. All wobbling seats—all save the gel-filled one—come with a little hand pump to inflate them.
You should think about your child’s best selection based on their preferences and what your primary objective is with this straightforward seat:
The Spiky Wiggle Seat is the one we’ve been using at home for the last month, and it’s certainly the most popular. To put it mildly, my two oldest boys, ages 8 and 6, often argue over who gets to eat it at which meal. Despite having no significant sensory difficulties, my elder kid enjoys sitting on it. However, he doesn’t have the strongest core, so using the inflatable cushion is a fantastic idea.
Isaac, my six-year-old, very certainly has sensory demands. He enjoys vigorous, rough motions that provide him with a ton of proprioceptive and vestibular information.
Since he was born in the midst of the summer, I recently brought a wobble cushion to his kindergarten class as a gift for his “half birthday.” His amazing teacher immediately went out and bought two more since the kids loved it so much!
Funny thing is, Isaac’s eyes were so bright with excitement when I opened ours that he seemed to be about to explode. All because he knew his body would fall head-over-heels for it simply by looking at it!
The Bumpy Wiggle Cushion is second. This cushion has considerably tiny, almost perceptible bumps on it than the wiggle seat above. This cushion may be stood on and supports up to 150 lbs. It’s ideal for youngsters who dislike the previous wobble seat’s spikey feel.
Your youngster may prefer the “squishier” texture of this seat filled with gel rather than air since it has a fully smooth surface and a different sensation when sitting upon. No air pump is required. There is a version specifically for teenagers.
Wiggle Wedge Cushion No. 4 This seat has a wedge-like design as opposed to the traditional seat. If strengthening your core is your main objective, you may want to think about using this method since it is intended to do so optimally.
5. Two Sided Wiggle Seat — If you’re unsure which kind of cushion your youngster will prefer, this one offers the best of both worlds. There are smooth bumps on one side and rough, spherical spikes on the other.
The purpose of a wiggle seat or wobble cushion is now clear to you. How might it best serve your child? maybe while they’re completing their schoolwork, playing a game of Go Fish with the family, or at dinner? Please tell us in the comments.
