This recipe is for you if spaghetti with meat sauce is a family favorite but most canned sauces leave you feeling “meh.”

This substantial, meaty spaghetti sauce recipe comes from a dear friend of mine, who makes quadruple quantities on the stove and freezes dinner-sized amounts.

Over the years, she’s given me so many tubs of it that I eventually asked for the recipe so I could make it myself.

Then I included a time saver: the Instant Pot!

This recipe serves around eight generously–enough for one supper (with two teenage sons) and one portion to freeze for another week in our situation.

What You’ll Need to Make Instant Pot Meat Spaghetti Sauce

  • Use either extra-virgin or ordinary olive oil.
  • Use a yellow or sweet onion for the onion.
  • I used entire garlic cloves. Use 1/2 teaspoon minced, jarred garlic in lieu of each clove (for a total of 1 teaspoon jarred garlic in this recipe).
  • I used meat from a nearby farm for the ground beef. If you’re purchasing from the store, choose for a slimmer choice to avoid having to drain additional grease.
  • I use Better Than Bouillon for my beef broth. If you don’t have any chicken broth, you may use it instead.
  • Crushed tomatoes: This recipe yields a very smooth sauce, but if you prefer an almost entirely smooth texture, pureed tomatoes may be used instead.
  • Sauce made with tomatoes
  • Paste made from tomatoes
  • Dried oregano, basil, parsley, and thyme, as well as granulated sugar, salt, and pepper, are used as spices and seasonings.

How to Make Meat Spaghetti Sauce in an Instant Pot

Set your Instant Pot to Saute mode first. Pour in the olive oil. Add the ground beef and onion when it’s hot and shimmering, stirring to break up the meat.

Cook, stirring regularly to avoid burning, for 30 seconds after adding the garlic.

Scrape any pieces from the bottom of the saucepan with the beef broth to deglaze it. Combine the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and other spices and Ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Stir it well.

Remove the lid from the Instant Pot. Turn to Manual after making sure the top valve is set to “Sealing.” Set the timer for 15 minutes.

When the timer goes off, execute a quick release by pressing the “Venting” button on the lever (I always place a kitchen towel over the valve to catch the steam). Open the lid and stir well after the valve has lowered.

Help! My kids aren’t fond of onion chunks.

Because her team like a smooth sauce, Cheryll included 1 teaspoon onion powder and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder in her recipe.

Help! I can’t get my Instant Pot to come to pressure!

When adding the beef broth, make sure you scrape any browned pieces from the bottom of your Instant Pot. Food adhering to the bottom of the pot may prevent the Instant Pot from coming to pressure, as I discovered the hard way.

How long will this sauce keep in the fridge?

Refrigerated leftover beef sauce should be consumed within 3-4 days.

Is it possible to cook this dish without using an Instant Pot?

Yes, you may prepare it in a stovetop saucepan. Simply follow the recipe’s directions and cook it on the stove for at least an hour, stirring periodically.

What is the best way to freeze spaghetti sauce?

Allow the sauce to cool fully. (I usually keep the sauce in the fridge until it’s thoroughly chilled.) Then divide it into one of the following options:

  • Ziptop bags that can be frozen. Squeeze out all of the extra air. Lay the bag of sauce flat on a baking pan in the freezer until hardened for easy stacking.
  • Containers that can be frozen. If you’re using glass jars, choose ones with a wide opening (jars with “shoulders” are more likely to fracture in the freezer). Glass Pyrex dishes or freezer-safe plastic containers may also be used.

8 servings (about)

15-minute prep time

30 minutes to prepare

45 minutes in total

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef, uncooked
  • half an onion, diced
  • 2 big garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 gallon beef stock
  • Tomatoes, crushed (28 oz) (1 large can)
  • 16 ounces Sauce made with tomatoes (2 small cans)
  • 6 ounces Paste made from tomatoes (1 small can)
  • 1 tablespoon oregano, dry
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, dry
  • 1 tablespoon basil leaves, dried
  • 1 tbsp sugar (granulated)
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme (dried)
  • a half teaspoon of salt
  • a quarter teaspoon of pepper

Instructions

  1. Set the Instant Pot to the Saute setting. Add the olive oil once it’s heated. Stir in the ground beef and onion, breaking up the meat into tiny pieces as it cooks. Cook, stirring regularly, for 30 seconds after adding the garlic.
  2. Deglaze the kettle with beef broth, scraping any pieces from the bottom. Combine the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and other spices and ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Stir everything together well.
  3. Cover the Instant Pot with the lid. Ascertain that the valve is set to “sealing.” Set the Instant Pot for 15 minutes on manual.
  4. When the timer goes out, perform a Quick Release by turning the valve to “venting” and letting the pressure out (I place a towel over the pressure valve to catch the steam).
  5. Open the lid and stir well after the valve has lowered. Serve.

Notes

You may substitute chicken broth for beef broth if you don’t have any.
