Jamie Oliver’s “chicken sausage rolls” are a popular dish. The recipe includes chicken, breadcrumbs, eggs, milk and herbs.
With just five Ingredients, including chicken sausages and tortilla wraps, you can make delicious sausage rolls in no time. There’s no need for pastries!
You can’t go wrong with sausage rolls! They’re a household favorite, liked by both parents and children, and ideal for a fast lunch or afternoon snack when the kids come home from school.
Instead of dough, I used turkey sausages, chutney, and tortilla wraps to make this lighter version of sausage rolls last Christmas.
It may sound unusual to use a wrap instead of pastry, but believe me when I say it works. In the oven, the wraps get really crispy, and you won’t miss the pastry at all.
Without Pastry, How To Make Sausage Rolls
In this dish, I used chicken sausages. I like the Tesco-branded sausages, but any chicken or turkey sausage would suffice. Remove the skins and mash them with a fork in a mixing dish.
After that, set a wrap on a chopping board.
Place half of the sausage mixture in the center of the wrap.
Fold the wrap up as tightly as you can, starting on the right side and finishing seal side down.
Remove the wrap’s ends and cut it into six sausage rolls. Continue with the second wrap and the remaining sausage mixture.
Arrange all of the sausage rolls on a baking sheet. In a cup or dish, lightly whip the egg and brush it over the tops of the sausage rolls. Finally, sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Cook for 20-25 minutes in the oven, or until golden brown and the sausage flesh is cooked through.
SUBSTITUTIONS FOR Ingredients
Sausages — In this dish, I used chicken sausages, but turkey sausages would also work. If you like, you may use pig sausages or even vegetarian sausages.
Tortilla Wrap – I used a white wrap, but wholemeal or a 50/50 wrap would also work.
Gluten-free Wraps — Gluten-free wraps will suffice.
If you’re allergic to eggs, you may wash the tops of the sausage rolls with a little milk instead.
Sesame Seeds — If you don’t like sesame seeds, leave them out. Alternatively, poppy seeds may be used.

- If you want to get ahead on your Christmas cooking and have them ready now, prepare the sausage rolls but instead of baking them, flash freeze them for a few hours on a tray or plate until firm. Then put it in a freezer bag or container to keep it safe. You may bake them straight from the freezer when you want to cook them. Add them to a lined and oiled baking pan, and increase the cooking time by about 10 minutes.
