Have you ever struggled to get a good night’s sleep? So, how about your kid?

I recall the first time I went to Charlotte’s home, I was her occupational therapist.

“What can I do to get her to sleep, take a nap, and remain asleep?” her mother asked me right away. “I’m not going to be able to keep going like this.”

I could see her bloodshot eyes and sense the worry flowing from her, which was understandable! 

During our conversation, I discovered that her mother was doing a lot of things correctly. She was putting her to bed at the same time every night. Her night ritual was soothing. She had lots of chances to get some exercise. She was a good eater.

I wondered whether Charlotte was having trouble sleeping because of sensory concerns, or as I like to call them sensory “needs.”

In this case, a weighted blanket could be able to assist everyone get a better night’s sleep since sleeping with a heavy blanket can aid to soothe the nervous system. I asked a few key questions to see whether Charlotte might benefit from more weight in her blanket:

  • Was she an energetic person who enjoyed leaping and climbing? (She replied with a resounding YES!)

What Exactly is a Weighted Blanket for Kids?

While it may seem unusual, a weighted blanket is exactly what it sounds like: a blanket filled with little weights. The idea is to make the blanket a bit hefty so that it can provide deep pressure stimulation to the person below it!

Weighted blankets are available in a variety of sizes, textures, and weights. They are suitable for a broad spectrum of youngsters, from toddlers as young as two or three years old to older children aged seven, eight, ten, and beyond.  

Before using any weighted blanket, see your child’s physician if you have any concerns about his or her age, weight, or health issues.

Weighted lap pads, which are essentially a heavy cushion or pad that may be put over the lap, are another variation on the weighted blanket. This provides the same deep touch pressure for day-to-day chores. Consider how difficult it is for children to sit still at the dinner table or at school.

Weighted blankets, like Charlotte, may have a near-magical effect on certain children’s sleep issues. Constant pressure may be incredibly soothing, assist the body transition into sleep, and reduce anxiety.

Are weighted blankets for children with Autism or for all children?

Some children’s senses don’t handle information as effectively as others’, thus they seek out or avoid it more. Many children with special sensory demands may benefit from the use of a weighted blanket, even if they are undiagnosed.

However, children with specific needs such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) have distinct sensory requirements, which is why weighted blankets are often advised for these children.

Sensory demands, however, are unique to each person, whether or not they have a diagnosis. And, if you’re manufacturing your own weighted blanket, it’s an investment in both money and time.

While using a weighted blanket to assist a child or adult with or without sensory issues, Autism, or SPD fall or stay asleep may be quite beneficial, it may also be ineffective. Charlotte had no diagnosis, therefore the weighted blanket was quite beneficial to her. When she had it on, she didn’t get out of bed as often and slept through the night.

At the same time, I’ve seen lots of youngsters for whom it just did not work. When it was put on top of them, kids who refused to try or yelled at the top of their voices.

That’s why it’s important to consider certain indicators that your kid may or may not like using a weighted blanket, since if they don’t, they won’t use it. We never want to make kids do anything they don’t want to do.

Signs that your child could benefit from a weighted blanket include:

  • Sleeping or resting beneath a mound of blankets or thick comforters is one of his favorite things to do.
  • Crawling into small corners or under furniture is one of his favorite pastimes.
  • Has a problem (even after a lot of physical activity) sitting still and relaxing
  • Wears a lot of bulky sweaters and sweatshirts.

Signs that your child isn’t responding to a weighted blanket include:

  • Is tactile a defensive tactic? (very sensitive to touching different textures)
  • Sleeping or lying beneath blankets is not something he enjoys.

These listings, of course, are neither exhaustive or guaranteed. I’d show your youngster photographs of one online and explain what it is and how it feels if they’re old enough. Inquire whether they believe it will be beneficial to them. Kids are frequently well aware of their own wants and will provide candid responses.

Because nonverbal or autistic children may be bewildered by the weighted blanket at first, it’s critical to teach how to use it and gradually introduce it to them. 

As I previously said, weighted blankets are sometimes used throughout the day to assist relax children, but this might upset children who are highly active and seek out a lot of motion. Some children will only react to them when they are sleeping.
